It starts slowly, but after not many pages the universe, story and characters portrayed have grabbed the reader.<br /><br />The use of mock documentation made the story realistic as well as fantastic in the style of Jorge Luis Borges. So much stuff about the theatre threatened pretension like Samuel R. Delany, but the clear and gripping storyline saved the novel from that. Experimental for pulp fiction, but not too experimental for Whoviana.<br /><br />I felt that this was one of the best New Adventures novels in its portrayal of the seventh Doctor, Ace and Bernice Summerfield. They are all likable and involved in this story, but they are still recognizable. Ace in this novel is a soldier more like Sergeant Benton: friendly, useful, capable and enthusiastic.
